A great read in to the ways that we can all look at ourselves and think about the thoughts that we are having. However I'm going with 4 stars because there's a section (from about p120) about boundaries and intrusive thoughts that really resonated. I loved Bryony Gordon's other book, Mad Girl, and rated it 4/5 ⭐ so it's safe to say I had high expectations for her latest book. We may think that normality does exist because of the sizable numbers of people who don’t seek psychological treatment. In 2017 she won the MIND Making A Difference Award for her work in changing the perception of mental health in the media.

Bryony Gordon has created a memoir style guide for navigating ‘mental ill health’, a phrase i much prefer to mental health or wellbeing. We might not condone the action, but we can usually relate to the need a person is trying to meet, whether it’s self-protection or something else. The freedom is yours to chapter-hop and take what you need…when you need it, safe in the knowledge that the absence of ‘normal’ applies as much to our mental health🧠…as it does the tacts we take, to try and understand and improve it!I also liked the brief 4 page summary at the back of all the empowering things Gordon covers in the book. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. In other words, one should not stick out and be too much out of anything, or believe they are “some kind of special. I'm a little uncomfortable with absolute self-acceptance: we live in a society and should be willing to see flaws in ourselves.

I share quite a few traits with Gordon but this book made me realise the thing that I already knew with acknowledgement - that my rational side is usually louder. Gordon is adamant that you should accept yourself, not try to please others, and 'learn that a healthy relationship is one in which you love each other unconditionally'.I have had mental health issues for 17 years and this is the first book I have read that has made a real impact on me. It also presupposes that everyone's experience of mental illness has a coherent narrative structure, which I highly doubt.

Take my example: a Swedish colleague once told me I was “scary”—“too emotional, too talkative, and too intense. While it doesn't help to beat yourself up for not being normal, surely attempts to work on your mental health are about trying to get your brain to behave more normally? Convincing myself I was doing OK and forgetting that living with a mental health struggle is a life long commitment, I didn’t expect this to resonate with me as much as it did!My mind was too busy judging, so it had no time to listen or understand other points of view, and everything outside my comfort zone scared me. Bryony Gordon offers sensible, practical advice, covering subjects such as sleep, addiction, worry, medication, self-image, boundary setting, therapy, learned behaviour, mindfulness and, of course – as the founder of Mental Health Mates – the power of walking and talking.

Whether you are just feeling frequently worried and anxious or have a serious mental health challenge, I think there will be something in this book for you. This was a really genuine, empathetic, and realistic mental health guide and I really, really adore that the author included her own experiences with illnesses OTHER than anxiety/depression.It’s essential that we embrace our differences with compassion and accept diversity as a reality of the world we all live in. We want to educate others on how disabilities may affect a person, yet it isn’t the only thing that defines them.
