Even as children, as children generally are, they were aware where the differences between their homelife and those of those of their peers.

He was unconscious for seven days and walked with braces for several months; [14] because of this incident, he developed an extreme fear of hospitals and became prone to fits of rage. Includes exclusive access to all West's police interviews, prison diaries, papers, solicitor interviews - and his private collection of video tapes, as well as all the interviews given by his wife, Rose West. But of course one of the more unique and sinister aspects to this story is the vital role played by Rose West, unlike in most other similar scenarios, she was no innocent victim swept up in the madness and chaos, but instead she was actually a motivating force behind much if not most of it, a domineering figure with terrifying and violent mood swings which inevitably led to the death of various young women and children. This book will shock, sicken, disturb and even anger you, but it is an important book , allowing the reader to try and understand the cruelty man is capable of. Much of Fred's family effectively disowned him, [9] his mother banished him from the household, and he moved into the Much Marcle house of his aunt Violet.

This book only got 2 stars from me not because of the content - that was obviously going to be disturbing - but because I wasn't keen on the writing style. I’m not going to pretend this is an easy read but I’m glad to say it doesn’t dwell on accounts of the murders themselves, although of course they do feature, rather this is Mae’s account of things she remembers from childhood; Heather and her younger brother Stephen feature largely here because of the first three children of Rose and Fred West were close in age.I liked the fact that he went into the family history of both people, because it is always important and relevant when people turn violent. Also, given the ages of the many tenants and transient nature, I wonder if they would have known what to do or would have been believed. I wanted to like this book more, as it came highly recommended, but somehow it just seems a bit 'flat' to me. Rose is labelled a nymphomaniac by Wilson, one who happened to meet another dominant personality and together they egged each other on.

By 1957, Fred and his brother John frequently socialised at a youth club in nearby Ledbury, where his distinct and guttural Herefordshire accent marked him as a " country bumpkin". I did find myself wondering, however, why the family didn't seem more appalled or shocked by Fred's actions. Her father was schizophrenic and her mother was a manic depressive who received shock treatment; what a family tree! I first heard of the Wests when the Appropriate Adult mini-series/movie came on cable here in the US. Seeing her escape avenue, Owens agreed, and vacuumed the house to indicate her belief in becoming an extended member of the family. Charmaine's body was initially stowed in the coal cellar of Midland Road until Fred was released from prison. Fred was arrested, and freely admitted to police he had been molesting young girls since his early teens and asked: "Doesn't everybody do it?

Howard Sounes broke the first major story about the Wests as a journalist, and covered the murder trial of Rosemary West, before writing this , the classic book about the case.People in the neighborhood seemed to know the family was not normal yet nobody including police did anything for years even though Fred already had a criminal record. After the rape, Rose followed Anna Marie to the bathroom and handed her a sanitary towel, explaining to the child: "I'm sorry. Rose occasionally sexually abused Anna Marie herself, and later took extreme gratification in degrading her with acts such as binding Anna Marie to various items of furniture before encouraging Fred to rape her, and forcing her to perform household chores while wearing sexual devices and a mini-skirt.
