That ending brought such a deep smile to my face that, as you reach it, most readers will likely agree with me. And don't expect the contestants to be particularly likeable, because (much like the residents of The Shore from the last novel) they absolutely are not. My secret is that I’ve secretly watched tv-shows, being both fascinated and disgusted by myself for peeking into others lives. The mystery itself is suspenseful and twisty, and I think I suspected almost every character of murder at one point or another … well, except for the actual murderer, that is.

DC George Kent, an introverted, closed-book, work-oriented woman, has recently transferred to their team as DS Leo starts dating a very pushy lady and tries to spend more time with his son. It's all about the money, from the presenter locked into a contract she wants out of to the contestants who all have a secret they wish to remain hidden, to the producer Miles who is playing an evil game by his own rules. The author's ability to create a sense of anticipation and mystery is truly commendable, leaving you eager to unravel the secrets hidden within each chapter. Ffion is such a formidable and fierce character - I could read a dozen more books with her at the centre. If another player can guess the truth, they won't just be eliminated - they'll be exposed live on air. All of them threaten to walk out, until Miles, the producer and creator of the show, points out that they have all signed contracts, with sufficiently robust but unread small print that means they are all trapped in the show. The seven contestants had believed that they were taking part in a survival show that would last fourteen days. So I went back with the audio to help me concentrate better as I was still very interested in the plot and characters. I am the biggest Clare Mackintosh fan and as such, I’m thrilled to report that A Game of Lies was a total winner for me.

The central mystery keeps you guessing and the relationships between our major characters continues to be compelling. Instead of building rafts and braiding bamboo (which they probably don’t have in Wales but roll with me here), they find out that each of them has a secret.Fans of the first book will undoubtedly relish the opportunity to rejoin these characters on their journey. What they thought was a show in the vein of Survivor was, in reality, a show that would expose their deep, dark secrets. He of course turns up for the new investigation, but they can’t seem to find their footing together.

Let's not forget how, from the moment I read the first DC Morgan book, I fell in love with Cwm Coed, a small fishing town nestled between Wales and England. I enjoyed this installment more than the first one--the pace and plot are balanced, and the mystery is tightly wound. No wonder that this leads to a contestant disappearing, because some secrets are too dark to be revealed. A propulsive and topical thriller set against the beautiful backdrop of the Welsh mountains - fearless, fiery and funny DC Ffion Morgan is fast becoming my new favourite cop -- T.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for sharing this amazing book's digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts. Translated into forty languages, her books have sold more than two million copies worldwide and have spent a combined total of sixty-eight weeks in the Sunday Times bestseller chart. Mixed reviews that claim some readers didn't enjoy the mystery as much as the first book or couldn't connect with the reality show contest characters don't sway my five-star (rounded up from four and a half) rating.

I was so looking forward to this book as I loved the first one in the series, but for some reason, this just felt different. Al snel na deze bekendmaking verdwijnt één van de deelnemers spoorloos van het terrein en wordt rechercheur Ffion Morgan belast met het onderzoek. The contestants all assumed that this would be a survival for the fittest type of show- but the producers spin this round where they have to complete challenges and tasks in a game of lies. De sfeer in het kamp wordt dus al snel zeer giftig en het duurt niet lang voor iemand vermist raakt. Seven reality show contestants are stranded in the Welsh mountains, and the name of the game is to expose their secrets.
